Goodfire

Up the Road from the Big Indian

On the way down from Freeport you pass the Big Indian. A fiberglass chief from 1969, planted on Route 1 to pull tourists into a moccasin shop that closed decades ago. He is still there, spear up, headdress bright, watching the cars go by. Hello my friend.

Goodfire sits a stretch up the same road. The Freeport room is warm, a full kitchen and bar in a building that has been a wine bar and a taco joint in other lives. Looks very inviting.

We sat outside in the sun. The patio is the place to be when the weather holds, open and unhurried, an afternoon that stretches. Cars passing by, but you hardly notice.

CMYK is the one to order. A Portland IPA, citrus and pine and pepper up front, soft enough to keep going. It earns the flagship spot.

A good place to lose an hour.

NOTE: Goodfire has a second location in Portland's East Bayside, on Anderson Street next to Lone Pine. Smaller and cozier, with no food.
